POSITIONPURPOSE:
This is a limited technical position in the collection and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing and performance of approved waive Tests. Duties performed follow standardized lab practices and procedures under the supervision of a Licensed Medical Technologist or the Lab Supervisor. Also, duties will include revenue collection including cash handing, ensure that the Billing and Encounter Forms are processed correctly.
Coordination of work from the patient care areas, maintaining the work flow of documents to and from data Processing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/
Experience:
Graduate from a standard high school or GED equivalent. Appropriate clinical lab techniques in an accredited training institution. Six (6) months phlebotomy experience preferred. Certified Lab Assistant or Certified Phlebotomist. ICD 9 Coding experience preferred. Experience in Patient Financial Services. Knowledge of Medicaid / Medicare, Kid Care, other Health Insurance, sliding fee scale and financial setup preferred.
Licensure / Certification:Applicable and/or available License as Laboratory Technician, Certified Laboratory Assistant, Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant from the State of Florida. CPR certification.
Skills / Ability:Basic computer knowledge, phlebotomy skills, and knowledge of cashiering functions. Ability to relate to diverse ethnic population. Must have clerical skills, ability to type 20 – 30 wpm. Ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Bi-lingual preferred.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (THIS IS A NON-EXEMPT POSITION)- Performs blood drawing and processing duties or occasionally reference as part of a team collects blood from infants and adults by micro and macro techniques for complete counts or component.
- Must have the skills needed to obtain blood from difficult veins using both the syringe and vacutainer.
- Instructs patients in the proper preparation and collection of timed specimen.
- Prepares blood samples for a large volume of routine chemistry tests, including listing of specimens, examining samples, to see if blood is ready for testing, checking the condition of serums and placing blood in tubes for processing.
- Performs waive lab procedures, e.g. pregnancy test and urine dipstick.
- Post laboratory billing and payments into Intergy computer.
- Accurately identifies the assigned lab based on HMO contract.
- Order and stock supplies and issues supplies, as needed to the other units and centers.
- Sorts and files correspondence, lab reports or other documentation as applicable.
- Answers telephone, relay messages to staff, and distributes memorandums.
- Monitors all lab request and documents receipt of results as applicable.
- Assist the providers in locating results.
- Maintains work log and appointment schedules for laboratory services.
- Dispenses medical appliances to patients as directed, and give proper specimen collection instructions.
- Where applicable participate in appropriate Continuing Education, In-service Training, Performance Improvement Activities and/or maintain current licensure and/or certification.
- Keeping alert of emergency needs of patients waiting for services.
- Attend departmental and institutional meetings as required.
- Maintains laboratory work areas clean and orderly.
