Legal Specialist – Tenants’ Rights Unit Legal Services of Greater Miami (LSGMI)

Legal Services of Greater Miami (LSGMI) is a nonprofit law firm serving low-income individuals and families in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. We are seeking a Legal Specialist to join our Tenants’ Rights Unit, with a primary focus on eviction defense and housing stability. This is a mission-driven role for someone who wants to make a direct impact on preventing homelessness and supporting tenants during housing crises.

the Work

The Tenants’ Rights Unit and Eviction Diversion Project help tenants facing eviction, rent subsidy terminations, unsafe housing conditions, and housing discrimination. Our clients include individuals and families who are disproportionately affected by eviction, including people of color, people with disabilities, and people with limited English proficiency.

As a Legal Specialist, you will be a key point of contact for tenants seeking help and an essential support to our attorneys.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview tenants to identify housing-related legal issues, primarily evictions
  • Communicate with clients and follow up as directed by supervising attorneys
  • Prepare clear case summaries for attorney review
  • Draft legal documents under attorney supervision
  • Conduct factual and legal research
  • Prepare, file, and organize client documents
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and records
  • Perform on-site and off-site client intake
  • Communicate with courts, landlords, and third parties as needed
  • Provide administrative support to attorneys (scheduling, document preparation, scanning, mailing)
  • Participate in weekly case reviews and unit meetings
  • Stay informed about changes in housing law and community resources
  • Notarize and/or witness documents for clients
Required Skills
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with empathy and professionalism with clients under stress
  • Strong follow-up and case-tracking skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to quickly learn Legal Server or similar case management systems
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience or coursework related to housing, real estate, or legal document drafting preferred
  • Prior experience working with vulnerable or low-income communities is a plus
  • Bilingual skills are a plus (Spanish and/or Haitian Creole)
Salary & Benefits
  • Salary: $42,000, commensurate with experience
  • Benefits include:
