Job Summary

Works as part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Buoy Maintenance Team in Key West, FL to fabricate, install and maintain boundary, information, zone and mooring buoy systems.

Responsibilities
  • Operate all sanctuary vessels and maintain knowledge of local waters. Convert raw materials into anchor systems. Work includes cutting and splicing of lines (pick-up lines, down lines, thru lines).
  • Repair and service broken buoys. Include routine maintenance and cleaning of the buoys on the water and safe operation of a pressure washer.
  • Install and replace buoy systems, pins, and manta anchors. This includes operation of hydraulic systems (jackhammers, drills, load locker). Perform SCUBA dive operations in buoy system maintenance: underwater mechanical operations, disassembling and making repairs to defective equipment, replacing damaged parts and visual inspection of all system components. Divers with adequate training and experience will dive down to depths of 130 FSW.
  • Assist in establishing and tracking maintenance schedules for buoy systems, marine equipment, engine service, boats, vehicles and storage facilities. Organize, receive, stock and transport materials and equipment to work sites. Maintain all required documentation including purchasing, vehicle and vessel logs, and assist in maintaining buoy maintenance database. Perform administrative tasks such as email correspondence, timesheets and professional evaluations. Work with others as part of a team.

Communicate effectively with the public both orally and in writing.
  • Assist staff, volunteers and visitors on FKNMS research, education and resource management operations. May require vessel operations and dive support.
  • Perform routine vessel preventative maintenance and emergency repairs. Make repairs to hulls and bright work. Consult with marine services supervisor and lead marine mechanic on all vessel related work.
  • Maintain the buoy database, including organizing and managing data and maintaining the online interactive map.
  • Performs essential duties in emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required with 6 years of relevant work experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Departmental Requirements
  • Rescue Diver SCUBA certification or higher from a nationally recognized agency or military.
  • Fifty (50) logged open water dives.
