Job Summary

Works as part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Buoy Maintenance Team in Key West, FL to fabricate, install and maintain boundary, information, zone and mooring buoy systems.

Responsibilities
  • Operate all sanctuary vessels and maintains knowledge of local waters. Converts raw materials into anchor systems. Work includes cutting and splicing of lines (pick-up lines, down lines, thru lines).
  • Repairs and services broken buoys. Work includes routine maintenance and cleaning of the buoys on the water and safe operation of a pressure washer.
  • Installs and replaces buoy systems, pins, and manta anchors. This includes but is not limited to the operation of hydraulic systems (jackhammers, drills, load locker). Performs SCUBA dive operations in all aspects of buoy system maintenance: underwater mechanical operations, disassembling and making repairs to defective equipment, replacing damaged parts and visual inspection of all system components. Divers with adequate training and experience will dive down to depths Of 130 FSW.
  • Assists in establishing and tracking maintenance schedules for buoy systems, marine equipment, engine service, boats, vehicles and storage facilities. Organizes, receives, stocks and transports materials and equipment to work sites. Maintains all required documentation including purchasing, vehicle and vessel logs, and assists in maintaining buoy maintenance database. Performs administrative tasks such as email correspondence, timesheets and professional evaluations. Works with others as part of a team.

    Communicates effectively with the public both orally and in writing.
  • Assists staff, volunteers and visitors on FKNMS research, education and resource management operations. May require vessel operations and dive support.
  • Performs routine vessel preventative maintenance and emergency repairs. Makes repairs to hulls and bright work. Consults with marine services supervisor and lead marine mechanic of all vessel related work.
  • Maintains the buoy database and, including organizing and managing data and maintaining the online interactive map.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED is required and 6 years of relevant work experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Departmental Requirements
  • Rescue Diver SCUBA certification or higher from a nationally recognized agency or military.
  • Fifty (50) logged open water dives.
Desired Qualifications
  • Dive master certification, nitrox certification and 100+ open water dives.
  • Familiarity with dive equipment service and maintenance.
  • USCG OUVP captain's license and knowledge of local Florida Keys waters.
  • Use of pneumatic, hydraulic and marine tools/equipment used to fabricate and maintain subsea systems.
  • Proficiency in the use of Google web-based office suite, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
