Job Summary
The Supervisory Safety & Occupational Health Manager leads the Occupational Safety and Health Program at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center, overseeing program operations, compliance, and regulatory initiatives.
Responsibilities- Supervise employees in the Occupational Safety and Health Program.
- Develop performance standards, position descriptions, and evaluate work performance.
- Schedule work, manage leave, counsel employees, and initiate disciplinary actions.
- Recruit, interview, and select new employees.
- Identify training needs and secure resources for continuing education.
- Provide technical and administrative instruction to staff.
- Monitor regulatory environment and anticipate changes in priorities, staffing, and finances.
- Consult with Chiefs of Services and other administrators on safety matters.
- Plan technology, data acquisition, methodology, industrial hygiene, and system analysis for the MVAMC.
- Ensure implementation of safety, occupational health, and fire protection programs in compliance with JC, OSHA, NFPA, and other agencies.
- Interpret new safety, health, and environmental legislation; recommend policy adoption.
- Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting the Safety Program.
- Review contractor safety plans and evaluate risks for staff, visitors, and patients.
- Participate in pre‑construction meetings and assess contractor safety hazards.
- Plan and direct life safety and fire prevention programs; coordinate with local fire officials.
- Oversee fire alarm and extinguisher system contracts.
- Plan and direct hazardous‑materials and waste programs.
- Coordinate with state and local authorities to ensure compliance with hazardous‑materials ordinances.
- Respond to inspections and directives from JC, OSHA, CARF, EPA, and NFPA.
- Plan and direct emergency preparedness and develop comprehensive disaster response protocols.
- Maintain relationships with EMSHG, Area Emergency Managers, and local emergency officials.
- Provide system‑wide staff education and training on occupational safety, ergonomics, fire safety, hazardous materials, industrial hygiene, emergency procedures, and green environment management.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, or related field with at least 24 semester hours of qualifying coursework.
- One year of specialized experience at the GS‑12 level equivalent, including program management, policy development, and workplace hazard analysis.
- Knowledge of OSHA, JCAHO, NFPA, DOT, CARP, CAP, and state/local regulations.
- Experience developing and implementing safety program standards and procedures.
- Strong training and instructional skills.
- Ability to interpret legislation and translate it into operational policy.
- Preferred: 2‑3 years of safety experience in a hospital setting.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Selective Service registration required for males born after December
31,1959. - Certification of background/security investigation.
- Acceptance of a one‑year supervisory probationary period.
Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm.
