Position: Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) - Chemical Process Operator

Position Summary

This role is an Hourly - Direct Labor position responsible for operating and supporting a coating process. The primary equipment is operated through HMIs and a series of switches, push buttons, and other interactive control points. Successful operators produce the required amount of product in a defined period while ensuring all EHS and quality requirements are continuously satisfied. The operator works as part of a team with Operations Support, Engineering, Maintenance, and Management personnel.

Overtime may be required on occasion; limited travel may be required to support training. Operators will have opportunities for progression within the role.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform complex, multi‑level tasks from procedures and work instructions, including precise use of equipment and adherence to all SOPs.
  • Maintain timely and accurate record‑keeping using digital and handwritten tools.
  • Maintain 100% compliance with PPE requirements and verify equipment before each task.
  • Participate in all CPEX initiatives (5S, TPM, SW, VM, etc.) introduced into the process cell.
  • Operate within a fixed‑process environment with strong compliance to FAA and AS 9100 requirements.
  • Identify and communicate non‑standard situations, including EHS and product integrity concerns.
  • Follow best‑practice guidelines for product and raw‑material handling in a high‑vacuum coating environment.
  • Complete periodic TPM activities and checklists to support assigned processes and equipment.
  • Review own work for completeness and quality compliance, including electronic data logs, physical measurements, visual inspections, and gauge confirmations.
  • Operate support equipment such as abrasive blasting systems, parts washers, high‑temperature ovens, material‑handling equipment, surface‑enhancement equipment, and robotic water‑jet blasting systems.
  • Support coater operators with part loading/unloading, fixture assembly/disassembly, and chamber loading steps.
  • Maintain metal coating fixtures, including visual verification and removal of residual coating or contamination.
  • Assist process team in standard rebuild and material loading tasks (e.g., Turn‑Arounds).
  • Maintain punctual and accurate timekeeping according to site direct‑labor recording standards.
  • Cross‑train in other coating process areas as needed, completing training before assignment.
Qualifications
  • High‑school diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a production manufacturing environment.
  • Additional education, training, certifications, or licenses may be considered and may supersede the above requirements.
  • Proficient reading, writing, and verbal communication in English.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence (digital or handwritten).
  • Effective communication with supervisors, engineers, and co‑workers.
  • Basic math skills: decimals, fractions, percentages; conversion of scientific notation; conversion between English and Metric units.
  • Basic understanding of scientific principles including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and energy is a plus.
  • Application of common‑sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagram instructions.
  • Mechanical inclination and ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Team player and open to changes in work scope or procedures.
  • May be required to operate a forklift (training provided).
Physical Demands
  • Climb stairs multiple times during a shift.
  • Manual dexterity required for building or assembling small components with hand or pneumatic tools.
  • Repetitive motions such as turning a wrench or cutting wire.
  • Lift up to 35 lb. to waist level; lift up to 35 lb. to shoulder level; carry up to 35 lb. on shop floor.
  • May require wearing a SAR (Supplied‑Air Respirator).
  • Must satisfy vision criteria, including close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, focus adjustment, and color vision.
Work Environment
  • Exposure to extreme heat, sharp objects, and moving mechanical parts. PPE, machine guarding, and interlocks help protect employees; awareness of hazards and controls is essential.
