SummaryPerform routine preventive maintenance and repairs on the sewing machines. Ensure they are always in working order and maintain a parts inventory.
Duties and Responsibilities- Repair and set up sewing machines, including single-needle and double-needle models. (Pass Goodwill Practical and Written Test)
- Basic knowledge of Zigzag, Overlock/Safety Stitch, Coverstitch, Bartack, Flat Seamer, Belt loop, Buttonholing, Eyelet, and Programmable machines
- Ensure all machines are equipped with safety equipment, including belt protectors and other safety guards.
- Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Move sewing machines when required.
- Clean the sewing equipment. Change and monitor oil levels and filters.
- Lubricate or grease the machine parts as required.
- Repair the machine’s lamps and thread stands. Adjust electrical cables and air hoses.
- Connect and disconnect the sewing machines. Change electrical installations, including motors, switches, and plugs.
- Turn compressors, boilers, and creasing/fusing machines on and off.
- Monitor air leaks from production lines.
- Ability to change needles and identify defective parts, including sewing presser feet, needle guards, eye protectors, needle plates, trimmers/cutters, and more complex parts.
- Maintain order and keep the mechanic's workshop clean.
- Maintain an attendance rate of 95% or higher.
- Other duties are assigned.
- A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Constant updates on industrial machinery are also needed.
- Experience with single-needle lockstitch, chain stitch, bar-tack, buttonhole, felling, and irons is also required.
- At least ten (1) years of experience as a sewing room mechanic.
- Experience in all types of sewing room machinery.
- Experience with single & multi-needle lockstitch & chain stitch, bar-tack, buttonhole, felling & irons.
Must be able to read, write, and speak English effectively. Knowledge of Creole and/or Spanish is a plus.
