Position: Reefer Mechanic I

Job Title

Position at Seaboard Marine Starting rate: $22 per hour Long-term employment with opportunities for growth

This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and performing minor repairs on all refrigerated equipment, including gensets and power packs, to ensure peak performance, safety, and longevity. The position may also support container pre-trip inspections and conduct inspections related to structural repairs to ensure equipment integrity, operational readiness, and compliance with established standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • One (1) year experience working with the maintenance and repair of refrigeration units or possess refrigeration school certification.
  • Knowledge of electrical and refrigeration methods, techniques, and procedures involved in maintenance repairs and replacement.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak basic English.
  • Ability to obtain internal forklift certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
  • Posses organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees.
  • Ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with the maintenance and repair of gensets.
  • One (1) year of experience operating a forklift at OSHA standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary:

  • Monitors the temperature of the reefer containers.
  • Performs routine maintenance on the refrigeration units and electrical systems, tagging those that require repair.
  • Completes a visual inspection of the container structure, tagging those that require repair or cleaning.
  • Washes and cleans the reefer equipment.
  • Drives company truck to perform oil changes on gensets and power packs throughout the yard.
  • Assists with the execution of Agriculture Inspections.
  • Assists with the repairs of our refrigeration fleet (containers, gensets, power packs).
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards.

Secondary:

  • Performs weekly inventory of units.
  • Operates forklift to mount, dismount, and transport gensets and power packs to and from the service area.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Subjection to physical and/or DOT Screening may be required along with other tests as applicable.

  • The employee is frequently required to sit, bend forward, squat, kneel, reach forward, grasp, pinch, exercise repetitive wrist motion, finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • The employee must frequently lift, carry and push up to 10 pounds, pull up to 20 pounds.
  • The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Safety Requirements:

Conditions:

  • Work is performed primarily in the yard; exposed to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
