The Director of Communications leads and executes the organization’s strategic communications, storytelling, and brand engagement efforts across digital, print, media, and community-facing platforms. This role is responsible for elevating the organization’s visibility, strengthening donor and community engagement, and ensuring all communications reflect the organization’s mission, values, and commitment to equity and inclusion.
The Director of Communications acts as a key member of our Advancement department to help carry out strategies to advance our organization via our communications and fundraising efforts. The Director of Communications will also work collaboratively with the Programs department to support our programs and services, community engagement, advocacy initiatives, and special events. This position plays a key role in advancing strategic priorities including donor stewardship, unrestricted fundraising growth, storytelling, and brand awareness initiatives tied to short- and long-term impact goals.
The ideal candidate is an experienced communications leader who is highly organized, collaborative, creative, strategic, and passionate about social, climate, and economic justice. This individual should be comfortable working in a fast-paced and evolving nonprofit environment while balancing strategic planning with hands-on execution.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy aligned with organizational goals and Advancement priorities.
- Strengthen brand awareness and inspire donors, clients, partners, and community members to take action through strategic storytelling
- Ensure all communications consistently reflect the organization’s mission, values, voice, and equity-centered approach.
- Oversee the development and distribution of communications materials including:
- Newsletters
- Website content
- Flyers and brochures
- Annual reports
- Press releases
- Blogs and op-eds
- Videos and multimedia assets
- Ensure all communications materials are accessible, audience-centered, culturally responsive, and inclusive.
- Build and maintain relationships with media outlets and journalists
- Pitches relevant, relatable, and newsworthy stories when there’s an opportunity
- Develop and monitor digital advertising and outreach campaigns when appropriate.
- Create donor-centered communications that support unrestricted giving growth and strengthen relationships with supporters.
- Serve as a strategic communications advisor to leadership and staff.
- Train and support staff and board members on messaging, brand standards, media engagement, and organizational talking points.
- Manage communications workflows, project timelines, and internal request systems.
- Contribute to organizational reports, presentations, and strategic planning efforts.
- Supervise communications staff, contractors, interns, and/or consultants as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Directly supervises 1 employee within the Advancement department.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Catalyst Miami's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, onboarding / training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Language:
Professional working proficiency in oral and written English. Spanish or Haitian Creole proficiency a plus. - Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience considered. - Years of experience:
Minimum of 5 years of communications, marketing, public relations, or storytelling experience. - Computer skills required:
Microsoft Office Suite and working knowledge of web-based platforms such as Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, Nation Builder or similar. - Experience managing integrated communications campaigns and organizational branding initiatives.
- Nonprofit, fundraising, advocacy, or community engagement experience strongly preferred.
