Core Job Functions
- Perform and document complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.

- Facilitate patient transition within and between health care settings, including admission, transfer, and discharge.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
- Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision‑making by providing educational tools.
- Adhere to university and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguard university assets.
- Education:
Master’s Degree in Nursing. - Certification and Licensing:
- Graduate of a master’s in science in Nursing with an approved ARNP curriculum or higher.
- Florida Licensure as ARNP from the Florida Board of Nursing.
- Board Certification as ARNP from a nationally accredited organization such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
- Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience. - Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:
- Exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
- Complete assignments accurately with attention to detail.
- Analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Work independently or in a collaborative environment.
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
The APRN will perform patient assessments including medical history and physical exam, and in collaboration with the physician mentor, develop an appropriate plan of care in direct management of patients with eye conditions such as neuro‑ophthalmology and glaucoma. The APRN will also explore consult services, ocular surface services, oculoplastic services, and tele‑ophthalmology/virtual care. The APRN will work directly with staff, administration, patients, and families to ensure quality care across the continuum as an expert in selected practice areas.
The APRN will integrate current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care, and technological advances into the scope of practice and will participate in research data collection, quality improvement, discharge planning, and patient care coordination.
- Follow non‑acute chronic neuro patients requiring continued care.
- Follow non‑acute patients (cornea, retina, glaucoma) requiring continued care.
- Facilitate visual fields, refractions, testing, etc.
- Facilitate referrals to subspecialties and other referral requests.
- Route international patients and second‑opinion requests.
- Answer patient questions via email.
- Review records in advance of physician review.
- Complete telehealth visits.
- Measure prisms.
- Provide care to a selected group of patients by determining and rendering advanced nursing and medical interventions.
- Assessment/Diagnosis:
Interview/examine patients, review the medical history, physician diagnoses and orders, diagnostic test results to determine medical diagnoses, plan of care, and monitor progress. - Perform physical assessments.
- Review medical records including physician and consultation notes, lab and diagnostic test results to formulate medical diagnoses.
- Collaborate with physicians through discussion and assessment of diagnoses.
- Planning/Outcomes:
Develop a plan of care from assessments, diagnoses, and physician collaboration; identify expected outcomes; include interventions that reflect expected outcomes; document and coordinate care. - Provide patient/family education regarding disease processes, treatment options, treatment outcomes, possible complications, medications, discharge planning, and lifestyle modification.
