Responsibilities
- The Certified Nursing Assistant performs various direct patient care activities under the supervision of a registered nurse.
- Assist patients in dressing or undressing, bathing, and eating, and collect noninvasive body fluid specimens or gather vital signs.
- Aid physicians and nursing staff with procedures and document patient interactions.
- Provide for patients’ personal hygiene by giving bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves, and assist with showers.
- Assist with meals and feeds patients, ambulate, turn, and position patients, and provide fresh water and nourishment between meals.
- Administer enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, therapeutic and sitz baths, and apply restraints.
- Perform urine testing (sugar and acetone), specimen collection, and post-mortem care.
- Answer patients’ call lights and requests promptly.
- Maintain a safe and attractive environment for patients and staff and transport patients and equipment.
- Report patient conditions to the assigned nurse to ensure professional assessment.
- Measure and record food and liquid intake and output, and check and record vital signs.
- Provide patient help with walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
- Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent
- Certification and Licensing: CNA license and BLS certification (American Heart Association)
- Experience: 0 - 1 year of relevant Acute Care hospital experience preferred
