The Department of Pediatrics, School Health Initiative has an exciting opportunity for a Full-Time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to work in various school locations in Miami Dade County.

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) administers nursing care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, and ensures the health, comfort, and safety of patients. The incumbent provides quality care to designated patients and takes on various responsibilities, such as participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, as well as cooperating with the members of the nursing and medical staff and other hospital departments.

Job Functions
  • Collects patient assessment data and notifies appropriate nurse of actual or potential problems and needs on an ongoing basis.
  • Records patient information concisely, accurately, and completely.
  • Administers medications and performs treatments and procedures for all patients as assigned.
  • Assists with preparation of patient materials or correspondence that RNs, ARNPs, or MDs utilize to communicate with organizations within or outside the University.
  • Assists in preoperative and postoperative health teaching for patients and families.
  • Shares responsibility for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care plans.
  • Participates in team conferences, sharing knowledge, information, and ideas with team members.
  • Performs more complex nursing activities as competence increases.
  • Communicates frequently with team leader regarding patients’ physical and mental conditions.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Department Specific Functions
  • Provide first aid, follow-up assessments, and direct practical nursing care to students according to established clinic protocols.
  • Respond to students' health emergencies and perform care following standing orders within the confines of Florida Statute for LPNs.
  • Manage and update student health records and emergency information, inputting necessary documents into the appropriate databases.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and coordinate care plans for students with medical needs, documenting in clinic databases as necessary.
  • Ensure vaccination compliance and make appropriate communication with parents/guardians on required health matters.
  • Maintain clinic inventory, assist with medical supply preparation and orders, discarding expired supplies, adhering to infection control standards.
  • Coordinate mandated health screenings and inform caregivers of results.
  • Consistently collaborate with school staff and team leaders to promote health, safety, and effective care delivery.
  • Ensure a clean and organized clinic environment and report any equipment or facility issues to the appropriate department, ensuring communication with leadership.
  • Participate in school events and/or team conferences, with some taking place after school and/or on weekends.
  • Assists with the preparation of medical supplies, documentation, and communication needed in collaboration with student RNs, APRNs, or MDs.
  • Adheres to University policies and procedures and safeguards University asset.
  • Provides other duties of school health as assigned.

Core Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid State of Florida LPN license.
  • BLS from American Heart Association only.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work during school hours.
