Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating all nursing services within the skilled nursing facility. The DON ensures the delivery of high-quality resident care while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), OSHA, and all applicable professional standards. The DON serves as a key member of the facility's leadership team and promotes a culture of clinical excellence, resident-centered care, and employee engagement.
ClinicalLeadership
- Direct and oversee all nursing operations to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate resident care.
- Develop, implement, and monitor nursing policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
- Ensure nursing services are provided in accordance with physician orders, care plans, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor resident outcomes and implement quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and clinical decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with CMS, AHCA, HIPAA, OSHA, infection prevention standards, and all applicable federal and Florida regulations.
- Prepare for and participate in state surveys and regulatory inspections.
- Develop and implement Plans of Correction when necessary.
- Maintain survey readiness at all times.
- Recruit, hire, orient, mentor, supervise, and evaluate nursing personnel.
- Promote employee engagement, retention, accountability, and professional development.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels and appropriate staff scheduling.
- Conduct performance evaluations and corrective actions when necessary.
- Foster teamwork and effective communication throughout the nursing department.
- Lead nursing quality improvement initiatives.
- Review clinical indicators including falls, pressure injuries, infections, rehospitalizations, medication errors, and other quality metrics.
- Analyze trends and implement corrective action plans.
- Participate in the facility's QAPI Committee.
- Promote exceptional customer service and resident satisfaction.
- Address resident and family concerns promptly and professionally.
- Maintain open communication with residents, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Assist in developing and managing the nursing department budget.
- Monitor labor utilization and overtime while maintaining quality care.
- Manage department resources efficiently.
- Ensure appropriate inventory and utilization of medical supplies and equipment.
- Collaborate with the Infection Preventionist to implement infection prevention and control programs.
- Ensure staff adhere to infection control practices.
- Monitor outbreaks and implement appropriate interventions.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning.
- Lead nursing response during emergencies and disasters.
- Ensure staff are trained on emergency procedures.
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Florida.
