Job Summary

This position is part of the Resource Monitoring Internship (ReMI), a collaboration between the South Florida/Caribbean Inventory and Monitoring Network of the National Park Service and Florida International University. The role is designed to introduce students to resource monitoring through soil sampling, bird monitoring, vegetation sampling, sampling of exotic vegetation, and mapping of vegetation communities. The research assistant will work on projects related to the management of natural resources in Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, and potentially Dry Tortugas National Park, Virgin Islands National Park, Salt River Ecological Preserve, and St.

Croix. The position has a large field component.

Duty station is at South Florida / Caribbean Inventory and Monitoring Network, 18001 Old Cutler Road Suite 419.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High‑school diploma with three (3) years of experience; or two (2) years of post‐secondary education with one (1) year of experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of South Florida Ecology, vegetation, GIS, and sampling; strong desire to learn these skills.
  • Completed an undergraduate degree in Biology, Earth and the Environment, or a related field.
  • Comfortable working independently on task‑oriented projects.
  • Comfortable camping for extended periods.
  • Research experience, especially with vegetation, birds, soils, and/or water; other natural history experience is a plus.
  • Experience with data collection and basic skills in Excel, MS Word, photography, and GIS.
  • Outdoor experience with camping, boat skills, kayaking, or canoeing; must be able to swim.
