Responsibilities
- The Research Associate 1, SOM will work on mitochondrial regulation of leukemic/hematopoietic stem cells or in red blood cell maturation research projects under the supervision of senior staff.
- Use a variety of model systems and techniques to conduct basic and translational research. Model systems include in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (mice) models.
- Apply standard and innovative techniques to analyze DNA, RNA, protein, microscopic analyses, flow cytometric analysis, and FACS sorting.
- Maintain mouse colony; collect samples; extract DNA, RNA, and protein.
- Maintain well-organized, dated, detailed, and up-to-date laboratory notes (physical and electronic) documenting rationale, experimental design, materials and procedures, changes to the work, results, data analysis and interpretation, and suggestions for future experiments.
- Assist in preparing manuscripts, presentations, etc.
- Understand and interpret research protocols and procedures.
- Participate in the publication of significant results.
- Maintain an overview of relevant research findings.
- Ensure all research is conducted according to good research practices.
- Keep abreast of current publications related to methods, techniques, and developments in the area of research.
- Collect, prepare, analyze, dissect, and evaluate specimens or tissue cultures.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Perform a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.
- Perform calculations to complete research test results, collect data, and perform statistical analysis of laboratory results.
- Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field; master’s degree preferred.
- Certification and Licensing: Not Applicable
- Experience: No prior experience required (prior lab research experience preferred).

- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
