Post Doctoral Associate – AOML’s Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric & Earth Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a Post‑Doctoral researcher. The work will involve close collaboration with scientists at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL).

Overview

The principal objective of the position is to conduct and analyze a suite of high‑resolution regional ocean biogeochemical model simulations to provide actionable information to decision makers as part of NOAA’s Changing Ecosystems and Fisheries Initiative (CEFI). The incumbent will leverage the GFDL‑MOM6 North West Atlantic model to perform a range of simulations under the shared socio‑economic pathways (SSP) future scenarios, interpret large datasets, and assess ocean biogeochemical responses and ecosystem impacts.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct climate‑scenario simulations and incorporate diagnostics relevant to decision makers.
  • Investigate mechanisms behind ocean change and quantify physical and biogeochemical responses.
  • Explore impacts on climate, oceans, coasts, and marine ecosystems using simulation outputs.
  • Present findings at scientific meetings and publish results in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Engage actively in scientific discussions, MOM6 and CEFI working groups or forums.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in oceanography or a related field with a post‐doctoral background in ocean biogeochemistry.
  • Experience with ocean or biogeochemical modeling and running climate model simulations on High Performance Computing.
  • Strong skills in data analysis, Unix/Linux, and software such as MATLAB, Ferret, and/or Python.
  • Proven publication record, scientific writing ability, and communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic team and independently on interdisciplinary analyses.
Benefits

The appointment will be initially one year, renewable pending satisfactory performance and funding. The University of Miami is a premier research institution and the largest employer in South Florida, dedicated to a culture of purpose, collaboration, and service.
