Job Title:

Fisheries Biologist - Bio Sampling

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Job Responsibilities
  • Participate in bio sampling operations to understand Trip Interview Program (TIP) sampling operations, protocols, and logistical issues.
  • Periodically accompany Federal and partner TIP samplers to field sites, observe operations, and assist in collecting lengths, weights, and biological samples (primarily otoliths) from a subset of commercial fisheries catches.
  • Use standard database software such as Excel and Access, as well as advanced software such as SQL Developer and SAS, to query TIP and associated data for consistency checks, standardization monitoring, and report generation for review by the Branch Chief.
  • Produce quarterly reports showing SEFSC TIP sampler adherence to established protocols and meet with Dockside Samplers to discuss QA/QC reporting results.
  • Update and improve the SAS code underlying the QA/QC reporting tool as needed.
  • Use SQL Developer to conduct reviews of historical TIP data to answer user questions and respond to custom data requests.
  • Assist in leading research, development, implementation, and enhancement of electronic data collection systems used in the TIP program.
  • Work with technology vendors to research and implement viable electronic data collection methods and improve existing systems.
  • Develop training materials, technical manuals, and curricula to advance the use of electronic systems in dockside sampling.
  • Provide training and support for TIP samplers to maintain operations of electronic technologies.
  • Participate in public outreach events (Open Houses, Youth/Career Fairs, etc.) to explain port sampling goals and methods to the public, especially electronic technologies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MS degree in Marine Science or a related field, or BS degree in Marine Science or a related field plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles, and methodologies of fish or related biological field sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks using standard methods and techniques.
  • Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys.
  • Computer literate and experienced with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs, including SAS, R, SQL.
  • Capable of writing reports at the college level and making oral presentations.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience collecting catch and effort information from commercial fishermen.
  • Knowledge of collecting routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fish.
  • Skill in use of Android mobile device applications for field collections of environmental data.

Salary:
Approximately $60,000 – $65,000 per year.

Work will be based on-site at NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Miami, FL.
