The University of Miami/UHealth Department Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) to work in Miami, FL. The Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
  • Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
  • Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
  • Uses the internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
  • Adheres to University and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assist the Associate Director of the Biorepository in the oversight, coordination, and daily operations of the Post Mortem Team.
  • Provide technical leadership, training, and guidance to tissue recovery and processing personnel to ensure adherence to established protocols, quality standards, and best practices.
  • Monitor tissue recovery, processing, storage, and distribution activities to ensure compliance with Brain Bank SOPs, quality management requirements, and industry standards.
  • Participate in the recovery, dissection, processing, packaging, preservation, and storage of donated tissues in accordance with established brain bank procedures.
  • Coordinate pre‑case preparation activities, including the setup and verification of recovery areas, processing laboratories, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist in maintaining and overseeing tissue inventory systems, databases inventories, freezer operations, temperature monitoring, and biorepository storage facilities.
  • Support biospecimen request fulfillment activities, including specimen identification, preparation, packaging, shipping, and associated documentation.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the NIH Neuro Bio Bank  Portal and related tissue inventory and tracking systems.
  • Ensure the accurate completion of case documentation, specimen records, chain‑of‑custody forms, and database entries related to tissue recovery and processing activities.
  • Monitor compliance with quality assurance and quality control programs, including audits, corrective actions, protocol implementation, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the development, revision, implementation, and training of standard operating procedures, policies, and workflow processes.
  • Support regulatory compliance activities, including accreditation requirements, biorepository best practices, and institutional policies governing human tissue banking.
  • Participate in scientific, operational, and administrative meetings and contribute to departmental initiatives, reports, and strategic projects.
  • Serve in the rotating on‑call recovery schedule and provide operational support during after‑hours, weekend, and holiday tissue recovery activities.
  • Maintain competency in all required technical procedures, institutional training, and departmental educational programs.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of Brain Endowment Bank operations, research activities, and organizational objectives.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree relevant field
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
