The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Part-Time Research Assistant 1 to work in Miami.

Job Summary:
The Research Assistant 1 contributes to research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. The Research Assistant 1 performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities.
Core Responsibilities:
- Sets up and operates various scientific apparatus and makes minor repairs.
- Prepares correspondence and answers phones.
- Formulates and maintains bibliographies and completes applications and forms.
- Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents.
- Reviews and edits various materials for publication and prepares publication schedules.
- Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Department Specific Functions:
- Assist with ongoing NIH-funded research projects investigating the role of the gut–brain axis in opioid-associated comorbidities, including pain, neuroinflammation, and microbiome dysbiosis.
- Participate in laboratory techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, ELISA, tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, microbiome sample preparation, and molecular biology assays.
- Assist with animal studies involving mouse models of opioid exposure and pain-related behaviors under supervision and according to IACUC guidelines.
- Support microbiome and metabolomic studies through stool and tissue sample collection, data organization, and basic bioinformatics analysis.
- Perform literature reviews and assist in preparation of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts related to gut microbiome, neuroimmune interactions, and opioid research.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records, organize research data, and participate in weekly laboratory meetings and research discussions.
- Collaborate with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty investigators in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
