Description
The Director of Security is responsible for the strategic leadership, administration, and daily oversight of all museum security operations. This position ensures the protection of museum visitors, staff, volunteers, facilities, collections, exhibitions, assets, and museum property while maintaining a welcoming, inclusive, and service-oriented environment. The Director develops and implements security protocols and operational procedures in accordance with museum best practices and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
The Director of Security oversees the security personnel (internal and contracted) and works closely with the Chief Operating Officer to support the museum's operational and security objectives. This position collaborates across departments to support museum operations, and all other initiatives.
Requirements
Required Degree: Bachelor's Degree/4-Year Degree
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Public Administration, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible security leadership experience, preferably in a museum, cultural institution, hospitality venue, university, law enforcement, military, or similarly complex public-facing environment.
- Strong knowledge of security operations and incident investigation procedures.
- Experience managing cameras, access control, and electronic security systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage sensitive situations, and communicate effectively under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and incident reporting systems.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification required.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations as needed.
- Be an enthusiastic, helpful and positive member of the team.
- Be professional, responsible and mature in conduct and behavior.
- Be understanding of, encouraging to and friendly with all co-workers.
- Be self-motivated and use time wisely.
- Maintain open line of communications with each department on pertinent information.
- Maintain effective communication by means of meetings and memorandums.
- Adhere to all work rules, procedures and policies established by the company including, but not limited to those contained in the employee handbook.
- Walk, bend, lift (up to 25 pounds) files, office supplies, and electronic equipment.
- Finger dexterity to pick up paper and use computer keyboard.
- Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
- Ability to hear in normal tones including telephone and face-to-face conversation.
- Ability to walk extensive distances throughout museum facilities.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
- Ability to respond quickly to incidents and operational needs.
