Responsibilities
- Journeyman level mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of diversified heavy automotive equipment.
- Skilled repair, maintenance and servicing of a wide variety of conventional and specialized equipment and motorized machinery, using general and specialized automotive mechanics’ tools and shop equipment, gauges and machinery.
- Receive work assignments from a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Supervisor, either orally or in writing, and assist in diagnosing the type or extent of work needed.
- Perform the actual repairing, servicing or maintenance work, conduct fiscal tests or checks to ensure satisfactory completion, and receive general supervision during progress and upon completion.
- Diagnose, adjust, repair and service a wide variety of light, medium and heavy duty automotive equipment and machinery, including draglines, road rollers, bulldozers, road graders, front‑end loaders, ditching machines, backhoes, sewer maintenance equipment, air compressors, hydro cranes, compacting garbage trucks, and various types of special duty and conventional trucks.
- Diagnose, adjust, repair and overhaul motors of a wide range of automotive fire equipment, making tuning adjustments as necessary to ensure easy starting and effective operation for extended periods.
- Repair, overhaul and maintain specialized equipment on pumping, ladder and other automotive fire equipment, including pumps, valves, power take‑offs, hydraulic systems, and steering mechanisms; and build special bodies.
- Overhaul and service assemblies and accessories such as single‑speed and two‑speed rear axles, multi‑speed transmissions (one to ten speeds), Allison automatic transmissions and hydraulic, compressed‑air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components.
- Change tires and repair flats on a variety of heavy automotive equipment.
- Operate fuel‑delivery trucks, delivering gasoline, diesel fuel and/or miscellaneous lubricants to various city facilities.
- Operate various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, and specialized tools and devices such as dynamo meters, boring bars, valve‑refacing and reseating equipment, micrometers, dial gauges, wheel‑alignment gauges, clutch‑cover assembly devices, power saws, grinders, drill presses and lathes.
- Perform tests to locate defects in operation and to verify repairs before returning equipment to service.
- Supervise unskilled workers as needed.
- Make road calls to service equipment in the field.
- Perform other related work as required.
A high school diploma or its equivalent, completion of a training program at the high school or vocational level in automotive or heavy equipment mechanics, or three (3) current Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) certificates or automotive manufacturer certificates in varied specialties, plus two (2) years of automotive mechanic experience, one (1) year of which must have been in the maintenance and repair of heavy automotive equipment.
OR an equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of the required experience.
Special RequirementsValid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License (Class B or higher) must be submitted at time of application and maintained valid throughout employment. An X endorsement on the Commercial Driver’s License may be required at the time of application or must be obtained prior to completion of the probationary period.
