Automotive Equipment Mechanic II – District Six, North Dade Shop (1773 NE 205th Street, North Miami Beach, FL 33179) is a full‑time position within the Florida Department of Transportation. The role involves diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical and hydraulic systems on automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment and related vehicles, as well as performing tire work, preventive maintenance, and emergency road‑service calls.

• Perform skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment.
• Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed.
• Repair, change, and balance tires on automotive and heavy equipment.
• Perform preventative maintenance work to keep equipment in proper working order.
• Perform periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.
• Comply with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies.
• Assist in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities.
• Elevate questions/items of concern to Shop Manager.
• Submit requests for parts and supplies.
• Track and report time charged on various work activities and complete shop work orders.
• Respond to emergency road service calls and perform minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.
• Clean up after repairs and return tools to their proper location.
• Perform minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.
• Instruct other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks and other equipment.

  • Lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend.

  • Operate and perform pre‑trip/post‑trip inspections required on commercial motor vehicles (CMV) with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 pounds or more after obtaining CDL instructional permit & license.

• The incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on‑call” (24‑hours duty) when necessary.
• While on‑duty, the incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL‑Class B with air brakes) the incumbent is required to possess, or to perform other CMV safety‑sensitive functions.
• During emergencies & natural disasters, the incumbent must be available to work non‑standard and/or extended hours.
• The incumbent must possess a valid Class 'E' driver’s license and obtain a Class 'B' CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment and obtain a valid Class 'B' CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
• The incumbent is required to work with or around Department of Correction inmates.

• High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and two years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance, or an additional year of experience (total of three years) as a substitute for the diploma.
