Position: AQUATIC SPECIALIST

Overview

Limited supervisory work conducting numerous tasks related to the operation, management, scheduling, and compliance of an aquatic facility within the City of Miami. Work involves responsibility for conducting aquatic programs and activities for residents of all age groups. An employee is responsible for implementing pre-designated aquatic activities at an aquatic facility and ensuring staffing levels and operational conditions meet all standards.

Employees exercise independent judgment in conducting assigned activities as outlined by the Aquatics Program Planner or designee. Limited supervision may be exercised over subordinates engaged in aquatic or maintenance activities. Supervision is received from the Pools Supervisor who reviews work to determine program effectiveness and adherence to standard policy and procedures. This position requires extensive public contact and may be required to work flexible schedule and adjusted hours based on seasonal conditions and operational requirements.

Conducts general aquatic activities such as swimming lessons, sports, etc. for all age groups.

Responsibilities
  • Issues, collects and inspects all aquatic equipment and supplies daily to ensure all areas meet healthy and safety standards. Maintains an inventory control list of aquatic equipment located at the facility.
  • Maintains records on aquatic staff certifications, tracks renewals, and ensures all staff certifications are valid and up to date.
  • Prepares weekly schedules that meet program delivery and facility service level needs, as well as American Red Cross safety standards.
  • Assists in the enforcement of aquatic facility rules and regulations. Responds to emergencies at the facility, as needed.
  • Trains staff in the service delivery standards of tasks, including, but not limited to, programming, facility admissions, fee collection, cash handling, maintenance, and sanitation. Performs these functions in the event of a staff shortage or as needed.
  • Performs maintenance activities to prevent equipment malfunction and monitors the facility area in order to maintain a clean, safe and orderly facility. Reports safety hazards and submits facility work orders.
  • Responds to guest inquiries and complaints.
  • Prepares reports on operations, staff attendance, etc. as directed by higher level administrators.
  • Recommends new programs or facility enhancements based on guest feedback, industry trends, and safety standards.
  • Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications

A high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of experience supervising and coordinating aquatic programs.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of the required experience.

Necessary

Special Requirements
  • The following certificates and/or wallet cards must be possessed at time of application and maintained valid throughout employment:
    Lifeguard Training Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Training and First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificates issued by the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized certifying agency, and one of the following:
    National Recreation and Park Association Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification, or a National Swimming Pool Foundation Certified Pool-Spa Operator (CPO) Certification.

    Employees in this classification will be required to work various shifts, to include nights, holidays and weekends.
