Job Overview
Operates refuse trucks, flatbed trucks, dump trucks, and related equipment used in the collection, transportation, and disposal of solid waste, bulky trash, refuse materials, and other Public Works operations. Performs equipment inspections, routine maintenance checks, and related duties to support safe and efficient departmental operations. The regular work schedule is weekdays from 7:00 am to 3:45 pm. Punctuality and regular attendance are a must.
NOTE:
Individuals in this classification may be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends, and immediately before and after natural disasters.
- Operates trucks and equipment as required by the department. May work in various divisions of operations as assigned.
- Transports collected materials to designated disposal facilities, transfer stations, or other authorized locations.
- Assists with loading, securing loads, cleanup activities, and other manual labor associated with sanitation and Public Works operations.
- Conducts daily equipment/vehicle inspection of tire pressure, hydraulic pressure, air tanks, hydraulic fluids, transmission fluids, power steering, lights, and other critical parts of the equipment/trucks assigned to operate for daily tasks.
- Informs supervisor of any operating deficiencies of trucks and equipment.
- Operates all equipment and vehicles safely. Observes surrounding conditions, including residents, equipment, and property, to ensure equipment and vehicles are operated in a strictly safe manner.
- Must wear the appropriate safety equipment relative to the type of equipment being operated at all times.
- Maintains radio or other communications with foreman and office as required. Follows all radio communication protocols and procedures.
- Maintains and writes a variety of records relating to inspections, daily work sheets, daily work logs, and materials issued, etc.
- Performs some manual labor outside the vehicle, such as raking and checking loads.
- Interacts with residents and the public in a courteous, polite manner.
- Performs other related Public Works duties as assigned.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver License with Air Brake Endorsement or higher and a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be reliable, with a satisfactory record for attendance and punctuality.
