Description
Operates a selection of heavy motorized equipment and performs a variety of other tasks as required. The employee in this class may be responsible for the efficient and safe operation of equipment and for ensuring that other assignments requiring the use of heavy motorized equipment are performed properly. Standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation.
This class differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator because of the higher degree of skill required in operating equipment, the type of equipment operated, and additional responsibilities associated with supervising other equipment operators, mechanics, maintenance workers or other subordinate workers.
- Performs pre‑trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, checking radiator water level, oil level, turn signals, lights, mirrors, and visual inspection of tire condition and other items depending on the equipment.
- Operates equipment such as bucket truck, front‑end loaders, aerial lifts, hoist truck, skid loader, hand and power saws, wood chippers, winches, blowers, stump grinders, etc.
- Supervises crew(s) involved in assigned tasks and is responsible for correct completion of those tasks in addition to operating equipment.
- When not operating motorized equipment, works as a laborer or semi‑skilled laborer as assigned.
- Services and maintains all of the equipment.
- May work with pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
- Does related work as required.
Job Location
Works outdoors in varying weather conditions; operates equipment such as combination backhoe, loaders, grader, trenchers, bucket truck, and other equipment developed or advanced from future technology as required by the job. Uses various hand tools and power tools (e.g., chainsaws).
Minimum RequirementsHigh school graduation or GED plus some experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.
Additional RequirementsPossession of a valid Florida commercial driver’s license Class B or higher with none of the following traffic violations during the last 3 years:
- Driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage or narcotics.
- Leaving the scene of an accident.
- Failure to report an accident.
- Vehicular homicide.
- Fleeing or eluding a police officer.
- Reckless driving (evaluated with regards to all relevant facts).
- Driver’s license suspended or revoked two or more times (other than for non‑renewal of auto).
- Five or more violations.
- Two or more 'tat fault' accidents.
Evaluation of training and experience as included in candidates’ applications. Only the top applicants who most closely meet the specific requirements will be scheduled for a practical assessment/road test on the use of some of the equipment listed above. Applicants must qualify on the practical in order to remain on the eligible list.
Skills- Good knowledge of the operation of a variety of motorized equipment.
- Good knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations and accident prevention practices.
- Skill in the operation of automotive equipment under all types of weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of trees.
- Ability to lift and drag heavy tree limbs and materials.
- Ability to work at heights.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to respond to backup alarms, shouted responses, commands and warnings.
- Ability to maintain equipment.
- Ability to accept responsibility.
- Physically able to perform duties.
