Operations Manager - Trucking Job Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of a trucking company. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing both owner-operator trucks and company-owned trucks, ensuring safety compliance, optimizing efficiency, and enhancing the company’s safety score with insurance companies and relevant authorities.

Responsibilities Driver Management
  • Recruit, train, and supervise drivers to ensure adherence to company policies and safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to drivers.
  • Address driver concerns, performance issues, and operational challenges promptly and effectively.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, and professionalism.
Safety Compliance
  • Develop and implement safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews to identify and address potential hazards.
  • Monitor driver safety performance, violations, accidents, and compliance records.
  • Coordinate with relevant authorities, insurance providers, and compliance personnel to maintain and improve the company’s safety score.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable DOT and FMCSA requirements.
Fleet Management
  • Oversee maintenance schedules, inspections, and repairs for company-owned trucks to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Coordinate with owner-operators to ensure their trucks are properly maintained and meet all applicable safety and compliance standards.
  • Monitor vehicle maintenance records and address recurring mechanical issues.
  • Work with vendors and maintenance providers to control repair costs and improve fleet reliability.
Operations Optimization
  • Monitor and analyze operational data to identify areas for improvement.
  • Implement strategies to improve efficiency, productivity, and overall fleet performance.
  • Collaborate with logistics, dispatch, maintenance, and administrative teams to streamline operations.
  • Monitor equipment utilization, driver productivity, and operational costs.
  • Develop and implement procedures to reduce downtime and improve on-time performance.
Customer Service
  • Liaise with customers to ensure their transportation needs are met.
  • Resolve customer issues, complaints, and service concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain positive relationships with customers to enhance satisfaction and retention.
  • Work closely with dispatch and operations teams to ensure consistent service quality.
Budget Management
  • Develop and manage budgets for operational expenses, including fuel, maintenance, repairs, and staffing.
  • Monitor operating expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Implement measures to improve profitability and overall financial performance.
  • Review operational spending and recommend adjustments when necessary.
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation, or a related field preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in trucking operations management or a similar role.
  • Thorough knowledge of trucking industry safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of DOT and FMCSA regulations.
  • Proven leadership and team-management skills.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, and develop drivers and operations personnel.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Customer-focused approach with strong relationship-building abilities.
  • Proficiency with fleet management, dispatch, transportation, and safety-compliance software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred/required, with a clean driving record.
