The Paramedic Fire Captain is a management-level position responsible for leading and supervising an assigned shift, including direct oversight of Fire Lieutenants and personnel. Under the direction of the Assistant Chief/Fire Chief, the position plans, coordinates, and manages shift operations, training, fire prevention activities, personnel performance, and departmental programs. The Paramedic Fire Captain provides leadership during emergency incidents by directing fire suppression, EMS, rescue, hazardous materials, and disaster response operations to protect life and property.
This role exercises independent judgment in operational and emergency situations and may be required to perform demanding physical duties in hazardous and high-stress environments.
- Supervise and lead shift personnel in daily operations, including emergency response, station activities, training, maintenance, and operational readiness of personnel, apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
- Serve as Officer in Charge at emergency incidents, providing command, control, and direction during fire suppression, EMS, rescue, hazardous materials, disaster, and other emergency responses until relieved by a higher-ranking officer.
- Ensure assigned personnel complete required training; develop lesson plans, conduct instruction, evaluate performance, and maintain compliance with departmental, state, and federal standards.
- Promote teamwork, maintain discipline, and provide fair, impartial supervision by monitoring work performance, conducting evaluations, providing coaching and corrective action, and addressing performance issues, misconduct, and policy violations in accordance with department policies and procedures.
- Complete, review, and maintain accurate incident reports, records, evaluations, requisitions, service records, correspondence, and other required documentation.
- Manage and coordinate assigned programs, projects, and specialized activities; monitor progress, resolve issues, prepare reports, and ensure completion within established timelines.
- Assist in developing and implementing departmental goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and service delivery improvements.
- Coordinate shift activities with Chief Officers, outside agencies, vendors, organizations, and other stakeholders to support department operations.
- Inspect, maintain, and ensure the readiness, accountability, and proper use of department facilities, vehicles, apparatus, equipment, inventory, and property.
- Drive and operate department vehicles and apparatus safely and effectively under routine and emergency conditions.
- Participate in public education, fire prevention, community outreach, and public relations programs while maintaining a professional image and positive community relationships.
- Preserve emergency and fire scenes, protect evidence, and maintain scene integrity until released or transferred to authorized investigators.
- Deliver compassionate, safe, and effective emergency medical care and treatment in accordance with department policies, protocols, and applicable standards.
- Perform rescue and emergency operations, applying technical expertise and sound judgment to assess situations, protect life and property, and resolve complex incidents under stressful conditions.
- Remain current on advancements, best practices, and emerging trends in fire suppression, EMS, rescue operations, fire prevention, and emergency services through ongoing professional development.
- Attend meetings, seminars, workshops, and training sessions as required to support professional development and program objectives.
