Senior Roadway Engineer

Be part of a roadway/transportation design group with emerging professionals and senior design engineers/project managers. Collaborate with the Civil Team on projects that meet client objectives and solve challenges. The role requires strong technical, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. The candidate must be enthusiastic and motivated to lead small to large projects, serve as a key technical resource on challenging transportation projects, and thrive in a supportive office culture encouraging ideas, engagement, and learning.

Responsibilities
  • Determine methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform professional civil engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, building, infrastructure, and transportation channels to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; update infrastructure layout plans requiring coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients.
  • Perform complex design tasks and drawings using CAD (Bentley Open Roads Designer or Autodesk Civil 3D).
  • Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for safety and functionality of end‑users and transportation vehicles, incorporating future‑ready solutions with civil engineering design standards in both preliminary and final engineering activities.
  • Work individually or as part of a cross‑functional team to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, assist with laying out installations, establishing reference points and elevations, calculating costs and quantities, and ensuring work conforms with specifications, permits, compliance documentation, and regulatory analysis memos.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for interpretation or presentation of findings.
  • Maintain QA/QC standards and procedures for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of medium‑sized projects.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research, findings, and recommendations to improve design and/or construction issues or opportunities.
  • Assist in analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of field investigation data, providing input for action plans for moderate to high‑level risk mitigation.
  • Prepare and implement Site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Comply with regulatory requirements related to data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record retention.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.
  • Assist in project pursuits by contributing to proposal writing and client meetings.
  • Remain current with latest civil engineering techniques and practices.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and planners on projects funded by federal, state, regional, and local authorities.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 5–7 years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering and prior civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training certification.
  • CAD design skills in Open Roads Designer and/or Civil 3D.
  • Proficient knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and application to permitting and project work‑related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including active involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects.
