Job Summary
A corporate-wide position involving environmental remediation programs for all NiSource companies. This position will manage and support a portfolio of environmental liability and capital projects related to the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act (CERCLA) regulatory programs. Additionally, this position will be responsible for developing and managing contractor management, financial tracking and budgeting, and supporting our Due Diligence process.
The Environmental Coordinator will assist in managing these environmental liabilities by implementing processes that provide environmental support for business units in a proactive, cost-effective manner that is consistent with NiSource policy and business objectives. The position will involve travel to project locations to conduct and oversee field activity. This individual is expected to work closely with various facilities and stakeholders in the planning and implementation of environmental programs.
This individual will support continuous improvement related to environmental remediation performance and will enhance and maintain a process to track, monitor, communicate and minimize environmental remediation related risk. This position is intended for a candidate who is eager to become part of, and significantly contribute to, an environmental leader in the energy industry.

- Comply with company policies, procedures and best practices, and other directives from management
- Manage closure of environmental liabilities, including former Manufactured Gas Plants (MGPs), as well as retired electric generating stations, gas storage and compressor stations
- Assist in environmental Due Diligence reviews on behalf of the Company
- Coordinate with third-party consultants in reviewing data and formulating remedial and waste management recommendations based upon analytical results
- Activities related to budgeting and spend forecasting as related to capital project budgets, Environmental Reserves, and Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) estimates
- Act as a company representative for interaction with regulatory agencies
- Develop and oversee the completion of investigation studies and remedial actions
- Complete compliance inspections and assist with periodic environmental audits, coordinate completion of corrective actions resultant of either
- Coordinate and/or perform required environmental activities necessary to ensure environmental programs and permits are properly implemented and attain 100% environmental compliance
- Day-to-day activities will include the collection and review of project information, development of project work plans and work scopes, review of technical reports prepared by others, management of and work with consultants and contractors, and budget management
- Maintain a working knowledge of current environmental regulations and the regulatory process
- Analyze and interpret environmental related rules, regulations, policies and guidelines as necessary to meet applicable requirements and/or corporate directives
- Management of spill response activities, as needed
- Utilize existing systems, processes and procedures to identify and communicate opportunities for environmental related continuous improvement
- Provide clear, concise and effective communication with business partners to keep leaders informed of environmental liability and project status
- Bachelor's degree in science, Environmental Science, Engineering or related field
- Direct relevant environmental remediation or compliance experience (minimum 3 years for Coordinator 2, 5 years for Coordinator
3); alternatively, relatable environmental regulatory experience - Experience in managing third-party consultants or vendors
- Ability to develop and manage budgets and cash forecasts
- Be a self-starter with a high degree of initiative and ability to work both independently and within a team
- Proficient technical skills and/or experience in areas involving environmental remediation, compliance, or risk management
- Must have excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills
