Solid Works Designer/Lead

Tri‑Mation is looking for an experienced Solid Works Designer/Lead in custom machine building, preferably with automation experience. The role requires a collaborative mindset, the ability to work independently, and a proactive attitude. Candidates should be ready to lead larger projects with multiple designers and may work at Proos in Grand Rapids.

• Support the Design Department by developing, prioritizing, and executing projects on time, within scope, and on budget.
• Conceptualize and design specialty machines.
• Maintain customer contact from kick‑off to design approval.
• Oversee program needs, customer expectations, and project add‑ons through completion.
• Track timelines, budgets, and monitor progress.
• Develop BOMs from the design.
• Research and select sensors and other purchased components.
• Design with part variation, tolerancing, and manufacturability (machining techniques) in mind.
• Create related engineering documentation.
• Act as an active team player, supporting, collaborating, and building relationships.
• Travel less than 5 % of the time; may require same‑day, overnight, and occasional international travel.
• Mentor interns and co‑op students as needed.

• Experience and working knowledge of Solid Works, GD&T, Microsoft Office, and project‑tracking modules.
• Ability to plan, develop, schedule, and coordinate with up‑to‑date technical knowledge.
• Strong understanding of blueprints.
• Experience leading a team.
• Demonstrated skills in interpersonal communication, problem solving, critical thinking, empathy, relationship building, coaching, training, persuasion, and decision making.
• Ability to use independent judgment, creativity, and initiative.

Salary ranges from $60,000 to $80,000 per year.
