MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES - Medical Laboratory Science Faculty Job Classification Position summary

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at Andrews University is seeking a highly skilled and innovative individual for a full-time (12-month) tenure track Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) faculty to teach in a NAACLS accredited MLS Program. The applicant should possess skills to effectively teach university courses for MLS students and participate in appropriate scholarly and service activities consistent with the vision, mission, and philosophy of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences.

The candidate should demonstrate competence in both didactic and clinical education as well as curriculum development.

Qualifications summary
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in MLS or related area.
  • Doctoral or Ph.D. degree preferred.
  • National (U.S.) recognized Medical Laboratory Science certification such as that offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
  • Minimum of three years of generalist clinical experience with preferred emphasis on immunology/immunohematology (blood bank/transfusion medicine).
  • Commitment to professional development.

Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

A full-time (12-month) tenure track Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) faculty to teach in the NAACLS accredited MLS Program with skills and innovation required to effectively teach university courses for MLS students and participate in appropriate scholarly and service activities consistent with the vision, mission, and philosophy of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Andrews University. Eligible candidates should have a minimum of three years of generalist clinical experience with a preferred emphasis on immunology/immunohematology (blood bank/transfusion medicine).

Ideal candidates should demonstrate competence in both didactic and clinical education and the ability to deliver MLS curriculum both in the traditional classroom setting and online.

Primary Duties:
  • Teach clinical/medical laboratory science courses and their respective student laboratories as required to meet and maintain NAACLS accreditation standards for the Medical Laboratory Science Program.
  • Participate in curriculum review and development.
  • Participate in student assessment and evaluation.
  • Serve as an academic advisor.
  • Work with adjunct clinical instructors at affiliate facilities, including clinical site visitation (travel required).
  • Serve on assigned department and university committees.
  • Engage in research activities with students and colleagues.
  • Participate in student recruiting activities.
Supervisory responsibilities

Supervisory responsibilities include training and mentoring student workers.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in MLS or related area.

Technical competencies
  • Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to create and manipulate documents, manage files and folders, and work with multiple windows or monitors.
  • Create, edit, and upload audio files and video presentations.
  • Be able to create and manipulate files and folders.
  • Build/edit and manage courses in Learning Hub, the Learning Management System used by Andrews University. Learning Hub training is available.
  • Set up and manage student grades.
  • Create assignment folders to collect student work.
  • Technical skills required to become comfortable conversing with your students via email, Google docs/forms, Zoom, Teams, etc.
Interpersonal interactions

Must be comfortable interacting and communicating with students in an advisory role. Interpersonal interactions required for this position include:

  • High level of social contact with students and other faculty.
  • Somewhat responsible for the work outcomes of students and program.
  • Are sometimes placed in conflict situations in which students may be upset over a grade.
  • Speak in front of large groups of people on a daily basis.
  • Communicate with students and other faculty daily by telephone, e-mail, Teams, Zoom, or in person.
  • Write various types of communications such as letters and emails on a weekly basis.
  • Work in a group or as part of a team.
Physical demands
  • Frequently sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to speak clearly so listeners can understand.
  • Understand the speech of another person.
  • Occasionally able to lift at least 20 pounds.
Work environment
  • Most of the time work indoors in an office or classroom/lab setting around other people.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment as needed to teach student laboratories.
  • Work with chemicals and other laboratory-grade reagents.
  • Work somewhat close to other people.
