Under the administration of the Adult Services Manager, the Adult Services Assistant is responsible for a variety of tasks in support of the Adult Services Department. Duties include assisting patrons with reference and reader’s advisory, assisting with preparation of materials for programs, assisting in managing the adult collection and conducting programs as assigned.
Essential Functions (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO)- Provides friendly, courteous and accurate service to all users.
- Understands and implements library procedures and policies, while safeguarding confidential and restricted information.
- Develops and leads adult programming, both independently and as a team.
- Assists with the maintenance of the adult collection by shifting and withdrawing materials and by providing recommendations for purchase as directed by the department manager.
- Responds to reference inquiries and assists patrons with use of electronic resources including the online catalog. Refers questions to appropriate staff for further assistance.
- Promotes the adult collection through reader’s advisory and develops booklists, bibliographies and books displays as assigned.
- In collaboration with Adult Services Manager, provides outreach to various community groups and organizations.
- Attends meetings and participates in continuing education opportunities related to adult services.
- Works the public service desk as needed, performing all desk functions including answering reference questions, placing patron holds, and general circulation functions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of library practices, procedures and technologies.
- Basic knowledge of library’s collections.
- Knowledge of Reference and Readers Advisory practices, procedures and technologies.
- Ability to deal courteously and diplomatically with patrons and colleagues.
- Ability to take initiative and use good judgment in making decisions.
- Ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
- Ability to exercise integrity and discretion with patrons and staff.
- Ability to prioritize work, meet established deadlines, follow tasks to completion and attend to detail as appropriate.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
- Ability to handle confidential information and materials.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office, Google Suite, payroll system and similar computer applications.
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
- Ability to use general office equipment.
- Ability to conduct patron interviews.
- High school diploma or equivalent required. LTA, Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Previous library experience preferred.
- Position requires day, evening and weekend hours.
- Position requires access to transportation.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
