Job Summary

River Valley Middle High School is seeking an energetic, engaging, and well-prepared High School English Teacher who is committed to helping students grow as readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators. The successful candidate will plan and deliver high-quality instruction using current best practices, clear learning targets, effective questioning, meaningful student engagement, formative assessment, and timely feedback.

The teacher will create a structured and supportive classroom environment where students are challenged, encouraged, and expected to do meaningful academic work. The teacher will also participate in professional learning communities, curriculum mapping, assessment development, and continuous improvement efforts aligned with the River Valley Strategic Plan. Knowledge of active backward design, assessment-first planning, and meaningful PLC participation is strongly favored.

This position supports the District's mission of engaging, empowering, and elevating the potential of our school community. The successful candidate will help promote a culture of learning, collaboration, student-centered decision-making, high expectations, and continuous improvement.

Work is performed under the supervision of the principal.

Courses to be taught: High School English, with the potential to teach College English based on scheduling, certification, qualifications, and program needs.

Qualifications and Other Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
  • Has a valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with appropriate English endorsement.
  • Ability to teach Advanced Placement, College Board, dual enrollment, or college-level English courses, or willingness to obtain necessary training or approval.
  • Meets certification and assignment requirements for the position.
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of English language arts content, literacy development, writing instruction, reading comprehension, and appropriate instructional strategies for high school students.
  • Has demonstrated experience or preparation in working with middle high school level students.
  • Ability to plan and deliver effective instruction aligned to standards, curriculum expectations, and student learning needs.
  • Knowledge of or experience with active backward design, including essential standards, assessment-first planning, curriculum mapping, and unit planning.
  • Knowledge of or experience with professional learning communities, including collaborative planning, use of student learning data, common assessments, and instructional response.
  • Ability to establish clear learning targets and use instructional strategies that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and academic growth.
  • Ability to use assessment data, formative assessment, and student work to adjust instruction and support student learning.
  • Ability to foster positive, professional, and effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply professional literature, curriculum materials, student data, and reports.
  • Ability to utilize and implement relevant instructional technology.
  • Willingness to participate in school improvement work, professional learning communities, department collaboration, and other professional responsibilities.
  • Willingness to be involved in supervisory or Schedule B positions, as appropriate.
  • Commitment to supporting the River Valley Strategic Plan, including culture of learning, collaboration, continuous improvement, student-centered practices, and high expectations.
Essential Functions of the Job

Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide effective English instruction that supports student growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and analysis.
  • Develop and implement engaging, well-planned lessons that facilitate active student learning and translate course standards into developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
  • Establish and communicate clear learning objectives for classroom activities.
  • Align instruction to district curriculum, state standards, course outcomes, and assessment expectations.
  • Use current best practices in instruction, including clear modeling, guided practice, independent application, student discussion, formative assessment, and feedback.
  • Support students in developing strong reading comprehension, written expression, academic vocabulary, analysis, argumentation, and communication skills.
