Location: Interlochen

Step into a meaningful contract opportunity supporting elementary education as a Sign Language Interpreter and American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher. This full-time position is tailored for a skilled interpreter to work closely with a first-grade student who has experienced significant language deprivation, making your expertise especially impactful and rewarding.

You'll provide dedicated, one-on-one support to ensure the student can access curriculum and fully participate in classroom activities. Collaborating with educators and support staff, you will help bridge communication and foster language growth in academic and social settings.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
  • Hold, or be willing to work toward, a 4.0 EIPA score (a lower score may be considered for candidates eligible for temporary certification)
  • Proficiency in ASL with proven experience interpreting in educational environments
  • Background in supporting students with language delays, particularly in elementary grades
  • Comfortable facilitating both receptive and expressive communication development
  • Familiarity with IEP processes and strategies tailored for students with language deprivation
  • Strong interpersonal skills-able to work effectively with students, teachers, and families
Role Responsibilities:
  • Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and extracurricular activities primarily for a first-grade student
  • Adapt communication style to meet the unique language needs of a severely language-deprived child
  • Support instructional delivery in one-on-one and group settings
  • Document student progress and collaborate in IEP meetings
  • Provide advocacy and model effective communication strategies for staff and peers
