Caledonia Community School District – Kraft Meadows Intermediate School, CALEDONIA, Michigan

Position: Level 1 Paraprofessional (Special Education-Cognitive Impairment)

Reports To: Building Principal

Compensation: $15.78 per hour (or more depending on experience) + $1.00 per hour differential; 27.5 hours per week/183 days per year.

Summary of Position

The Special Education (SE) Paraprofessional assists the teacher in supporting the physical and instructional needs of individual students with moderate to severe disabilities. Responsibilities include implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), self‑help, behavioral management, and instructional programs.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Assist in educational and social development of students.
  • Implement IEPs and monitor progress.
  • Provide support inside and outside the classroom to enable full participation.
  • Support students in developing appropriate social skills.
  • Manage behavior of assigned students as needed.
  • Adapt to each student’s communication, emotional, instructional, medical, physical, sensory, and social needs.
  • Assist with cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments, including wheelchair transfers, lifting, or positioning when applicable.
  • Assist with personal care (feeding, bathroom needs, hygiene) as appropriate.
  • Monitor and maintain medical devices needed for health and safety.
  • Assist with communication devices and systems.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, district personnel, and parents.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, legal requirements, and directives.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or special programs director.
Employment Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework desired but not required. Ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics is essential.
  • Experience: Prior experience with students or individuals with disabilities preferred but not required.

Physical Demands

Stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl regularly. Assist with transfers to and from wheelchairs, lifting or positioning. Lift up to 50 pounds. Noise level is usually moderate. May supervise students during inclement outdoor weather.
