VACANCY NOTICE
- Secondary Special Education Teacher (CI, EI, or LD) Middle School
Dowagiac Union Schools is seeking a student-centered and collaborative Special Education Teacher to provide specialized instruction and support services to students with disabilities in a middle school setting. The successful candidate will work closely with general education teachers, support staff, families, and administrators to ensure students receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE) while promoting academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth.
This position includes providing services through a continuum of supports, including push-in services, co-teaching models, small-group instruction, and specialized programming designed to maximize student access to the general education curriculum.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement in one or more of the following areas:
- Cognitive Impairment (CI)
- Emotional Impairment (EI)
- Learning Disabilities (LD)
- Ability to meet all Michigan Department of Education certification requirements
- Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Experience working with middle school students
- Experience implementing evidence-based instructional practices and interventions
- Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and intervention frameworks
- Experience collaborating with general education teachers to support inclusive practices
- Experience with push-in service delivery and co-teaching models in inclusive classroom settings
- Familiarity with progress monitoring, data analysis, and data-driven instructional decision making
- Experience conducting IEP meetings and collaborating with families and multidisciplinary teams
- Knowledge of accommodations, modifications, and assistive technology supports
- Ability to utilize educational technology to enhance instruction and student engagement
- Experience supporting students with behavioral, social-emotional, and academic needs
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and stakeholders
- Background or certification in mathematics preferred
- Provide direct and indirect special education services to students in accordance with their IEPs
- Deliver instruction through a variety of service models, including push-in support, co-teaching, small-group instruction, and specialized interventions
- Collaborate with general education teachers to plan, deliver, and assess instruction that supports student success in inclusive classroom environments
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals and objectives
- Maintain compliance with all state and federal special education requirements
- Collaborate with general education staff to ensure appropriate accommodations, modifications, and instructional supports
- Collect and analyze student data to monitor progress and inform instruction
- Participate in evaluation and reevaluation processes as a member of multidisciplinary teams
- Facilitate communication and partnerships with families regarding student progress and programming
- Support positive student behavior through proactive and evidence-based strategies
- Maintain accurate and timely records, reports, and documentation
- Participate in professional learning and district initiatives
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee
