The Special Education Supervisor provides leadership, coordination, and oversight of the district's special education programs and services. The Supervisor works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, related service providers, students, and families to ensure compliance with federal and state special education regulations while promoting high-quality educational opportunities for students with disabilities.
The Special Education Supervisor maintains a caseload of students, oversees the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), supports staff in meeting student needs, and ensures that special education services are delivered effectively and efficiently throughout the district.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
- Endorsement in Special Education.
- Master's Degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of three years successful experience in special education.
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, MARSE, and other applicable special education laws and regulations.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- CPI, Safety Care, or willingness to obtain required behavioral intervention training.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, staff, and community agencies.
- Knowledge of special education compliance, programming, and service delivery models.
- Ability to analyze student data and develop appropriate interventions and supports.
- Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.

Program Oversight and Leadership- Provide leadership and oversight of the district's special education programs and services.
- Ensure district compliance with federal, state, and local special education regulations and requirements.
- Monitor and support the implementation of IEPs, behavior intervention plans, and other specialized services.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of special education programs and initiatives.
- Coordinate special education services with administrators, teachers, related service providers, and outside agencies.
- Support staff in implementing effective instructional, behavioral, and inclusionary practices.
- Facilitate professional development opportunities related to special education and student support services.
- Assist with budgeting, staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation for special education programs.
- Participate in state monitoring activities, audits, compliance reviews, and corrective action plans as needed.
- Maintain a caseload of students receiving special education services.
- Facilitate and attend IEP, evaluation, manifestation determination, and eligibility meetings.
- Ensure all special education documentation is completed accurately and within required timelines.
- Monitor student progress and ensure appropriate services and supports are provided.
- Collaborate with parents, staff, and service providers regarding student needs, programming, and placement decisions.
- Assist in coordinating evaluations, reevaluations, and transition planning activities.
- Support the implementation of accommodations, modifications, and behavioral supports for students.
- Serve as a resource for staff and families regarding special education procedures and best practices.
- Assist in addressing student behavioral, academic, social, and emotional needs.
- Support the development and implementation of positive behavior intervention strategies.
- Participate in problem-solving and student assistance teams.
- Coordinate services with outside agencies and community organizations when appropriate.
- Provide direct supervision and support to special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers as assigned.
- Assist with staff evaluations, coaching, and professional growth.
- Coordinate and monitor paraprofessional assignments and responsibilities.
- Support administrators in addressing special education concerns and program needs.
- Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding special education staff.
- Sit, stand, walk, bend, and move throughout school facilities.
- Attend meetings at multiple district locations.
- Observe and support students in classroom and community settings.
- Participate in CPI/Safety Care interventions when necessary.
- Respond to student behavioral crises and assist staff in implementing approved intervention procedures.
The Special Education Supervisor works in a variety of educational settings, including classrooms, offices, and community-based environments.
