High School Visual Arts Teacher
Starting Date: Immediately
Location: Elk Rapids, Michigan
Elk Rapids High School seeks a motivated, passionate, engaged, and dedicated Visual Arts instructor to lead a visual arts classroom for the 2026‑2027 school year. The teacher will create a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment, foster educational excellence, and collaborate with students, colleagues, parents, and community members.
Responsibilities- Plan and prepare learning activities and guide students toward achievement of curriculum and district objectives.
- Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school.
- Provide instruction that helps students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciate qualitative judgments about art.
- Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting.
- Use acrylic paints with techniques such as dry brushing, staining, layering, under painting, and monoprinting.
- Apply a variety of masters techniques, elements of design, modern principles of art, and fundamentals of drawing media.
- Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
- Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse and minimize distribution and collection time.
- Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports.
- Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
- Plan and present art displays and exhibitions that showcase student work for the school and the community.
- May sponsor exhibits from outside the school.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships, both internal and external to the school district.
- Maintain professional competence through in‑service education activities and/or self‑selected professional growth activities.
- Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
- Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs, such as an after‑school art club.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the administration.
- Strong desire and ability to build meaningful, caring relationships with students.
- Ability to motivate students and influence student behaviors.
- Willingness and capacity to hold ongoing instructional‑specific conversations designed to focus efforts on improving student learning.
- Commitment to coordinate instruction within and across grade levels.
- Competence to collect and analyze data to inform instructional decisions.
- Ability to help create and thrive in a professional environment of mutual respect, teamwork, and accountability.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Visual Arts Education (LQ) endorsement K–12.
- Completion of an approved teacher preparation program.
- Bachelor’s Degree (minimum).
- Ability to secure teacher certification.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver engaging standards‑based instruction.
Salary is based on experience and qualifications within the EREA Contract.
