Position: Secondary Social Studies Teacher (Grades 9-12)

High School Social Studies Teacher (9-12)

Pickford Public Schools is seeking a dynamic, student-centered individual to join our secondary level teacher team. Minimum qualifications include a valid Michigan teaching certificate in the area of social studies for grades 6-12 (RX/CX). Additional subject area endorsement(s) are preferred but not required. Knowledge of and proficiency with technology and commitment to the unique role it plays in the educational arena of the 21st century are required.

Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding staff, children, and families is necessary. Willingness to work with colleagues as an active member of a professional learning community is essential. Proficiency in classroom and student management techniques is required. Proven ability to implement innovative methods of teaching using offline and online resources will be an added advantage. Willingness to teach electives offered by the district is required.

Exhibits strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Duties and responsibilities include instructing students in grades 6-12 in social studies using the district core curriculum and required state and federal standards for instruction. Create standards-based weekly plans related to curriculum standards with clear objectives for the upcoming instructional period, then modify, as needed, based on feedback gained through the implementation and evaluation process. Implement a social studies education program that focuses on the use of evidence-based instructional strategies, maximizes student participation, and meets the needs and goals of individual learners.

Use data to inform decision-making concerning instructional goals and to create, monitor, and implement student learning plans. Provide resources and suggestions to school staff and collaborate with the principal and district social studies professional learning community to create/promote and support improved achievement in the study of social science and humanities related topics at the secondary level. Actively participate in all professional learning opportunities and implement new strategies and skills into the daily routine.

Provide students with teacher modeling, guided practice, and scaffolding and support that allows students to move toward demonstrating skills and competencies independently. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of disciplinary literacy and its impact on the mastery of social studies subject matter. Provide rigorous learning activities that actively engage students in learning tasks that align to curriculum goals and support the use of inquiry and higher-order questions and probes to elicit student responses at various cognitive levels.

Make opportunities to integrate technology to support student learning. Provide for varied levels of student performance including multi-level teaching and accommodations, when appropriate. Develop and implement an appropriate classroom management system including classroom routines and orderly transition strategies for students. Help students in developing self-confidence and a positive self-image by building relationships and providing an environment of acceptance and support for each student.

Create a responsive and productive working relationship with parents, children, teachers, other staff, and the local community by remaining accessible, behaving professionally, and communicating clearly and concisely. Maintain accurate records. As needed for completion of duties, attend meetings outside of normal working hours. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor related to the teaching assignment.
