Position Overview
This position requires a current valid teaching certificate issued and endorsed by the Michigan Department of Education. The teacher serves as a classroom manager of prisoners and must employ good teaching practices at ABE, pre‑GED, and GED levels. The position is located behind the secure perimeter of a multi‑level correctional facility and is responsible for coordinating required testing of students.
Responsibilities- Manage classroom of prisoners and deliver instruction in ABE, pre‑GED, and GED educational levels.
- Implement effective teaching practices to meet the academic needs of all students.
- Coordinate required testing for students within the program.
- Ensure compliance with drug‑ and alcohol‑testing requirements.
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree in education.
- Current, appropriate Michigan teacher’s certificate issued by the State Board of Education.
- No specific type or amount of prior teaching experience required.
- Eligibility to work in a correctional facility, with clearance for students who may have felony or misdemeanor convictions (subject to background checks and completion of required sentences).
- Will pass a drug and alcohol test within 24 hours of a conditional offer.
Applicants convicted of a felony (or misdemeanor, pending completion of sentencing) are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation.
