Resource Room Teacher (Upper Elementary) – Bert Goens Learning Center 2026‑27 School Year
The primary goal of the Resource Room Teacher, with emphasis on students on the Autism Spectrum Disorder spectrum, is to ensure that there are individualized instructional programs for each student in the designated group. This person specifies the method of instruction, materials and classroom procedures to be followed. Implementation of appropriate record‑keeping and input on program effectiveness are also the responsibility of the classroom teacher.
This person is to work in conjunction with the support staff to ensure that the individualized programming needs of the assigned students are being met in all identified areas to ensure maximum educational gain.

Minimum Qualifications- Education:
Bachelor's degree in education - Certification:
Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education - Work Experience:
Previous experience working with students with significant disabilities and/or center-based programming
- Appropriate instructional and behavior management skills
- Familiarity with behavior modification, language disorders, and instruction of daily living/social skills
- Ability to work well with other school staff and develop vocational and functional living skills of young adults with ASD or cognitive impairment
- Effective communication with stakeholders to provide the best programs and services for students
- Ability to learn and perform medication and health‑related activities under the direction of the school nurse
- Participate in educational planning
- Demonstrate effective instructional behaviors and techniques
- Demonstrate effective behavior management with students
- Demonstrate effective classroom management
- Deliver programs toward meeting individual student needs
- Demonstrate leadership and direction to classroom aides/tutors
- Select and maintain instructional programs, materials, and supplies for the classroom
- Effectively communicate, consult, and team with parents, staff, agencies, and others
- Effectively plan and organize for instruction
- Maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning
- Maintain an effective record‑keeping system reflecting students’ program progress and other pertinent information
- Coordinate services for students within their respective classroom
- Research and utilize community resources and agencies (CMH, MRS, DRC, etc.) to benefit students’ present and future needs
- Continue to work with other staff and classrooms to provide a variety of learning opportunities
- Collect, record, and report data reflecting student progress on IEP goals
- Strive to increase knowledge of curriculum, materials, strategies, and opportunities in education of severely multiply impaired students through professional development and active involvement in the learning community
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed or established timelines
- Adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Director of Special Education
- Maintain reliable, in‑person attendance
- Valid driver's license required
As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
