Job Description
Title: Program Instructor of Automotive Technician - Maintenance & Light Repair (MLR) Program
Starting Date: Aug 17, 2026
Reports To: Van Buren Tech Administration
Location of Work: 250 South Street, Lawrence, MI 49064
Job Goal(s): The program instructor’s primary role is the instruction of students in a manner consistent with the philosophy and goals of Van Buren Tech. Generally, the roles are more broadly defined than those of a traditional classroom teacher and include: instructional delivery, assessment, program management, supervision duties, and curriculum development.
Qualifications:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with CTE Certification in CIP number 46.0000 OR eligibility for Annual Career Authorization (ACA) required (4,000 hours of relevant work experience in the past 10 years)
- ASE Automotive Technician Certification Required
Work Experience:
- A demonstrated successful work history in the Automotive industry
- Teaching experience at the secondary level is preferred
- Possess good interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work with students, instructors, support staff, and administrators
- Knowledge of a variety of teaching modalities and learning styles
- Ability to differentiate instruction based on student needs
- Understanding of effective classroom management techniques & strategies
Essential Job Functions:
Curriculum- Develop and operationalize a curriculum designed to achieve the stated goals of the Automotive MLR program.
- Accept the student as he/she is, establish individual student learning goals and an individual learning program.
- Identify and make use of school and community resources which will contribute to the effectiveness of the students’ learning experiences.
- Organize and meet with a program advisory committee.
- Develop a work-based learning component to allow students to gain real-world experience.
- Provide opportunities for students to participate in leadership opportunities, including Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs).
- Provide opportunities for students to earn industry recognized certifications or credentials.
- Maintain a program inventory control system.
- Manage a basic program budget.
- Supervise the students enrolled in their program during the time period which the students are in attendance.
- Develop and implement a safety program.
- Develop and manage a planned preventive maintenance program for equipment.
- Work in collaboration with employers, advisory committee members and work-based learning (WBL) coordinators to implement a continuum of WBL activities.
- Provide information for student data follow‑up for the CIP Self‑Review annual report.
- Make appropriate referrals to VB Tech’s Student Services staff.
- Assess/evaluate students per Van Buren Tech’s grading policies.
- Other duties as assigned by VB Tech administration.
- Valid driver's license required.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
