Overview
Portland Public Schools seeks an innovative, compassionate, and student-centered Special Education Teacher to serve in our High School Self-Contained Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Program. The successful candidate will provide specialized instruction and support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder while fostering academic growth, social-emotional development, communication skills, independence, and successful transition outcomes. Our district is collaborative and committed to supporting staff growth, instructional innovation, and positive outcomes for every student.
Responsibilities- Provide specialized instruction and support to students with ASD, focusing on academic growth, communication skills, social-emotional development, independence, and transition planning.
- Implement evidence-based instructional practices for students with diverse learning, communication, sensory, and behavioral needs.
- Utilize structured teaching practices, visual supports, and social skills instruction; develop individualized programming.
- Apply Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), behavior intervention plans, and de-escalation strategies as needed.
- Collaborate effectively with paraprofessionals, related service providers, general education staff, and families to support student outcomes.
- Integrate technology, assistive technology, and communication supports into instruction and learning activities.
- Contribute to a positive school culture with high expectations, professionalism, and a collaborative mindset.
- Assist with extracurricular programs and participate in the broader school community as appropriate.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Valid teaching certificate valid for Michigan.
- Autism Spectrum Disorder endorsement (ASD) preferred; candidates with another Special Education endorsement who are willing to obtain ASD endorsement may be considered.
- Knowledge of IDEA, Michigan Special Education Rules, and compliance requirements.
- Ability to facilitate IEP meetings and complete required documentation in a timely and compliant manner.
- Experience developing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) to address academic, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, and functional needs.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and use student data to inform instruction and monitor progress toward IEP goals.
- Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community partners.
- Commitment to improving student achievement and functional outcomes and contributing to a positive school culture with high expectations and strong community engagement.
