Para educator II - Elementary Transitional Learning Center (TLC)

Hours: 6.5 hrs/day (.8125 FTE), Part Time, Permanent

The incumbent performs a variety of instructional, training, and/or support duties to assist Special Education teachers in instruction, supervision, and education of students with severe physical and mental special needs that generally require placement in self-contained classrooms. The incumbent may also be assigned in one‑on‑one teacher‑to‑student situations when the students have needs similar to those of Structured Learning Center classrooms (e.g., physical disabilities requiring considerable support).

Initial wage placement according to NCSD/OSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

7:15 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.; subject to change depending on department needs.

Work calendar: 180 days per year.

North Clackamas School District participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS and OPSRP). The district contributes the employer portion; employees also contribute a mandatory 6% of their pay via payroll deduction upon eligibility, defined as working at least six calendar months in a qualifying position. Part‑time employees working at least six months and 600 hours in a calendar year will qualify.

• Successful completion of an Associate’s Degree, or two years of post‑high school education. Substitution by passing the written Educational Testing Service competency examination is possible at the district’s discretion.
• Certification or ability to become certified in first aid, CPR, and/or operation of defibrillators.
• Training in instructional and behavior intervention methodologies in reading, writing, mathematics, and in student restraint, safety, medication, and physical management and intervention systems.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a team member.
• Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing tasks and priorities.
• Ability to assist, console, and manage students who may be emotional, distraught, or frustrated.
• Ability to remain calm, focused, and in control when working with upset students, parents, guardians, and community members.
• Ability to follow written and verbal directions and to seek clarity and take action when needed.
• Knowledge and support of classroom management and student discipline procedures.
• Effective and accurate command of the English language.
• Ability to organize work and set priorities for timely and effective completion.
• Ability to protect the confidentiality of student information consistent with FERPA requirements and good judgment.
• Collaboration with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community members.
• Effective verbal and written communication.
• Skill in the use of office and computer equipment and standard office software, including student information system software.

• Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate and related field of study.
• Two years of experience demonstrating success working with children in a learning environment.
• Bilingual and bicultural skills.
• Familiarity, willingness, and ability to be trained in areas such as Down syndrome, Autism, multiple disabilities, mental health disorders, ADHD, etc.

• Collaborate with teachers and specialists in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, intervention, and enforcement of safe behaviors, enhancing social and life skills growth of students.
• Assist students with complex toileting, feeding, mobility, and personal hygiene duties.
• Support independent living skills such as cooking, laundry, and general personal hygiene.
• Assist in de‑escalating students at risk of harming themselves or others by following approved procedures.
• Provide instructional support and tutoring in large groups, small groups, and one‑on‑one settings.
• Implement behavior support and intervention plans, document student behavior, and maintain weekly progress reports.
• Assist in implementing physical and occupational therapy plans to improve range of motion, mobility, and positioning.
