Middle School Teacher Consultant

Locations:
Position 1 will be at Pioneer and Discovery Position 2 will be at West and Liberty

The Teacher Consultants will support a cohort of district middle school buildings. This person will work with classroom teachers to develop inclusive and innovative learning methods for 6-8 students with Individualized Educational Plans. They will serve as an advisor to special education and general education instructional staff in the area of academic achievement, classroom management, and the creation of equitable teaching and learning materials to support students with disabilities.

This includes providing disability specific support and services, problem solving and crisis prevention and intervention. The Teacher Consultant will be involved in supporting instruction in special education programs, daily activities and working closely with teachers, families, and students.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with at least one special education endorsement.
  • Master's degree in education or a field of study related to special education.
  • Three years of successful teaching experience with not less than two years teaching students with a disability in a special education classroom.
  • Possess or immediately qualify for Teacher Consultant approval from the Michigan Department of Education.
  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Extensive experience with, and knowledge of, behavior management principles.
  • Extensive experience with, and knowledge of, curriculum adaptations.
  • Demonstrated record of collaborative teamwork.
  • Demonstrated skills in parent consultation.
  • Proficient skills in written communication.
  • Extensive experience in the IEP process.
  • Experience in mediation and collaborative problem solving.
  • Experience with and knowledge of UDL framework and assistive technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultation support to middle school district buildings.
  • Completes academic testing, progress reports and other necessary record keeping.
  • Consults with special and general education personnel.
  • Builds capacity of middle school special education staff to provide instructional services to students who are enrolled in special education programs using research-based tools and strategies.
  • Works with members of a multi-disciplinary evaluation team to assist in the evaluation of students suspected of having a disability/requiring an IEP or in the re-evaluation process.
  • Facilitates/organizes educational needs for students with complex needs in a general education environment.
  • Provides professional development for staff as needed.
  • Supports building teams as they evaluate, complete special education documentation, build behavior plans and implement specific educational plans.
  • Meets with building teams and parents to address issues, problem solve, and build/modify support plans.
  • Consults and communicates with middle school special education supervisor, ASD consultant and coordinator, middle school resource room teachers and ancillary staff.
  • Supports middle school level students in county center-based programs as needed (attend IEPs/parent meetings).
  • Attend monthly department meetings, support and facilitate as necessary.
  • Performs other tasks as may be assigned by the supervisors.
  • Bending, lifting, and overhead work required.

Evaluation:
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.

Beginning Date:
August 25, 2026 New hires will be required to attend a three-day orientation August 19-21, 2026 Salary: PCEA Teachers Salary Schedule
