Paraprofessional - Instructional Support

The special education (SE) paraprofessional assists the teacher in providing for the instructional needs of students with learning disabilities. The SE paraprofessional assists with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including self-help, behavior management, and instructional programs.

Under the supervision of a certified teacher:

• Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff
• Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities
• Monitors and supervises curriculum-based testing and makeup work as assigned by the certified staff
• Assist students with any medical or physical accommodations or needs
• Performs clerical, classroom maintenance, and instructional duties as assigned by the certified staff
• Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in the school environment and community
• Plans instruction techniques and methodologies, and prepares lesson materials based on assessments of individual students and their needs
• Administers assessment tests and interprets results to identify student needs
• Records and reports assessment data to teachers and school administrators; completes required forms, reports, and other paperwork
• Assesses students to determine if they require Title One services and to provide metrics to measure the success of teaching efforts
• Instructs and reinforces core subject learning strategies
• Tutors students in one-on-one or small group settings in all curriculum areas
• Meets with teachers to discuss students' goals and progress and discuss additional interventions

EDUCATION:

This position requires the attainment of a high school diploma or equivalent. College coursework is desired, but not required. Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics is essential.

  Previous experience working with students or individuals with disabilities is preferred, but not required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Assists in the transfer of students to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning. Lift up to 50 pounds.
