High School Student Support Specialist And Mentor – Student Recovery Center (Src)

The high school student support specialist and mentor of the student recovery center (src) provides comprehensive academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and restorative support to students who may be experiencing behavioral concerns, emotional dysregulation, attendance challenges, academic disengagement, or difficulty successfully accessing the traditional school environment.

The student support specialist is responsible for helping create and maintain a safe, structured, welcoming, and restorative environment within the student recovery center. The src serves as a short-term intervention and behavioral reset space. The position works closely with students, teachers, administrators, counselors, behavior support personnel, families, and other members of the school team to help students remain connected to learning and successfully reintegrate into their regular classes and school community.

The student support specialist will utilize relationship-building, de-escalation, restorative practices, reflection, goal setting, academic support, and individualized interventions to help students develop the skills necessary for successful participation in school. The position will also maintain a caseload of students with section 504 accommodation plans and support the implementation, monitoring, and communication of accommodations in collaboration with the high school principal, assistant principal, and appropriate school personnel.

The effectiveness of the student recovery center depends upon the ability to establish trusting relationships with students while maintaining clear expectations, consistency, accountability, and a calm and supportive environment. The student support specialist will play a key role in ensuring that the src is an intervention and student-support setting rather than simply a place for students who have been removed from class.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in education or a related field; experience as a high school teacher is preferred.
• Previous experience working with adolescents in a school, youth services, or related setting is preferred.
• Experience working with students who demonstrate behavioral, social-emotional, attendance, or academic challenges is preferred.
• Experience with restorative practices, positive behavioral interventions and supports (pbis), de-escalation strategies, or other student intervention systems is desirable.
• Experience supporting students with disabilities or section 504 accommodation plans is preferred.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

• Provide daily leadership and oversight of the student recovery center in collaboration with the high school principal and assistant principal.
• Establish and maintain a safe, calm, structured, and welcoming environment in which students can regulate, reflect, learn, and prepare to successfully return to the regular school setting.
• Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the src as a short-term intervention space, behavioral reset environment, and smaller instructional/support setting.
• Supervise students assigned to the src, including students serving in-school suspension, lunch detention, or after-school assignments.
• Provide appropriate academic supervision and support to students while they are assigned to the src.
• Ensure students remain connected to classroom instruction and continue working toward academic expectations while receiving intervention support.
• Maintain clear, consistent expectations and routines within the src.
• Collaborate with high school staff to provide consistent student support and supervision.
• Assist in developing procedures that ensure continuity and consistency in the operation of the src.
• Utilize de-escalation strategies and relationship-based practices to assist students experiencing emotional or behavioral dysregulation.
• Facilitate restorative reflection and problem-solving following behavioral incidents or conflicts.
• Review and process student reflection and coordinate follow-up with the appropriate behavior coach, administrator, counselor, or other support staff.
• Help students identify the circumstances contributing to behavioral concerns and develop strategies for making more successful choices.
• Support restorative conversations designed to repair harm, restore relationships, and promote accountability.
• Assist students in developing individualized behavioral goals and strategies.
• Support the implementation of tier 2 and tier 3 interventions for students requiring additional behavioral, social-emotional, or academic support.
• Work collaboratively with school staff to identify behavior patterns and develop appropriate interventions.
• Recognize when a student requires additional assistance and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate administrator or support personnel.
• Develop positive, trusting, and supportive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
