Traffic Engineer (Professional Engineer)

This traffic engineering role is ideal for a licensed Professional Engineer with strong experience in traffic analysis, modeling, and traffic control design who wants to serve as a go-to technical resource in the Michigan region. The position is based in metro Detroit or Lansing and focuses on delivering high-quality traffic engineering solutions for roadway projects across the state, while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary design teams and transportation clients.

Responsibilities
  • Perform and lead traffic engineering, traffic analysis, and safety studies for Michigan roadway projects.
  • Develop traffic signal designs, signing and pavement marking plans, maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans, and Transportation Management Plans (TMPs).
  • Utilize traffic software tools such as Synchro/Sim Traffic, SIDRA, VISSIM, and/or RODEL to conduct traffic operations and capacity analyses.
  • Coordinate with roadway designers and project managers to integrate traffic engineering solutions into projects for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and other transportation agencies.
  • Review drawings, plans, and deliverables to ensure conformance with Michigan standards, project requirements, and internal quality control procedures.
  • Prepare technical specifications, cost estimates, project schedules, and client progress reports for traffic engineering assignments.
  • Participate in field reviews to assess existing conditions and support construction-phase traffic engineering needs.
  • Support construction activities by providing traffic engineering input, reviewing contractor submittals, and helping resolve traffic-related issues.
  • Assist with business development activities, including proposal preparation and technical support for Michigan transportation clients.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil engineers, roadway designers, and other specialists to deliver coordinated project solutions.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 5 or more years of experience in traffic or transportation engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan or the ability to obtain PE licensure within 6 months.
  • Demonstrated experience with traffic analysis and modeling software.
  • Proficiency with Open Roads Designer or Civil 3D for roadway and traffic design.
  • Experience using traffic software such as Synchro/Sim Traffic, SIDRA, VISSIM, and/or RODEL.
  • Strong knowledge of traffic engineering principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Ability to review and develop signal design, signing, pavement marking, MOT, and TMP plans.
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with project managers, roadway designers, and clients.
  • Ability to prepare specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and technical reports.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
  • Experience with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects.
  • Experience with local agency Federal Aid transportation projects.
  • GIS experience for supporting transportation and traffic analysis tasks.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary architecture and engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with Micro Station and Micro Station Open Roads.
  • Ability to support business development and proposal preparation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in plan review and quality control.
  • Interest in serving as a regional technical resource in traffic engineering.
Work Environment

This is a full-time, in-office position working Monday through Friday, typically 40–45 hours per week. The role can be based out of offices in Waterford, Lansing, or Muskegon, providing opportunities to collaborate closely with colleagues in a professional, team-oriented environment.
