Description

Metro Engineering Solutions LLC (MES) is seeking a Transmission Line Designer to join our team. MES is a leading utility and telecommunications engineering firm serving clients throughout the Midwest. This role requires a hands-on transmission line designer with proven experience supporting transmission line projects ranging from 69kV to 138kV. The Transmission Line Designer will work with project managers, engineers, utility clients, and internal design teams to produce accurate, constructible design deliverables.

The ideal candidate will have strong practical design experience and does not need to be an engineer or hold an engineering degree.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Transmission Line Project Support:
  • Support transmission line projects ranging from 69kV to 138kV from scoping through design completion.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders across right of way, environmental, siting, station engineering, joint use, distribution, and construction.
  • Assist with scope development, schedule tracking, and design package coordination.
  • Transmission Line Design:
  • Develop transmission and sub-transmission line designs using PLS-CADD for 69kV to 138kV projects.
  • Prepare plan and profile drawings, structure spotting, loading trees, structure framing details, and related design drawings.
  • Develop load sheets and associated drawings for custom steel poles.
  • Prepare material lists and support design documentation for transmission and sub-transmission projects.
  • Documentation and Standards:
  • Prepare drawings and documents for complete Issue for Construction (IFC) work packages.
  • Apply client standards, design criteria, and utility-specific requirements to design deliverables.
  • Support quality reviews by checking drawings, material lists, and design documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Team Support &

    Collaboration:
  • Coordinate directly with engineers, designers, project managers, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews, project meetings, and client coordination discussions.
  • Provide technical design input to support project planning, RFP development, and construction-ready deliverables.
  • Construction Support:
  • Travel to project sites within Michigan as required.
  • Support construction activities, RFIs, field coordination, and drawing updates as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation
  • Primarily office-based work environment
  • Ability to travel and/or work in the field as needed

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong hands-on transmission line design experience; candidate does not need to be an engineer
  • Required experience supporting transmission line projects ranging from 69kV to 138kV
  • Proficiency developing transmission line drawings, plan and profile sheets, structure details, and material lists
  • 4-10 years of transmission and sub-transmission line design experience preferred
  • Experience coordinating design deliverables with engineers, project managers, and cross-functional project teams
  • Ability to manage multiple design assignments, priorities, and deadlines
  • Proficiency in PLS-CADD (required)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (required)
  • Experience with MFAD (preferred)
  • Utility coordination experience with strong communication skills (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of applicable utility and industry standards, including NESC and relevant transmission line design practices
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, designers, internal teams, and utility clients
