Position OverviewThe Gogebic County Council of Veterans Affairs is seeking a dedicated, service-oriented individual to fill a new part-time, multi-role position supporting Gogebic County veterans and their families. This position combines responsibilities as a CVSO, DAV Van Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant.
County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO)- Assisting clients with preparing, submitting, and tracking VA and state benefit claims
- Explaining eligibility requirements and guiding clients through complex benefit programs
- Maintaining accurate and confidential case files and documentation
- Conducting outreach to increase awareness of available services
- Advocating for clients throughout the VA claims and appeals process
- Staying current on changes in veterans’ benefits, laws, and regulations
- Collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies to support veteran needs
- Coordinating and supporting volunteer drivers
- Maintaining passenger logs
- Ensuring compliance with DAV and VA transportation guidelines
- Serving as the primary liaison between the Iron Mountain VAMC and the Gogebic County Council of Veterans Affairs
- Greeting and assisting walk-in visitors and callers
- Managing appointments
- Organizing and updating records, files, and correspondence
- Handling incoming and outgoing communications
- Supporting the office with general clerical duties as needed
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with veterans and families with professionalism and empathy while maintaining confidentiality
- Obtain VA accreditation within one year of starting employment. Acquire annual Continuing Education Units to maintain accreditation
- Proficiency with Microsoft office software (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Knowledge of military culture and veteran benefits. Prior military service preferred
- Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License and vehicle insurance
